Service Description

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is a historical fiction novel set in 1789 Maine, inspired by the life of real midwife Martha Ballard. When a man's body is found in the frozen Kennebec River, Ballard is called to investigate, uncovering a link to a previous rape accusation against the deceased. As Martha uses her skills and her private diary to navigate the investigation, she confronts patriarchal power structures and the limited role of women in the early American justice system, ultimately forcing her to decide between loyalty and the pursuit of truth
